Outlet Works, Black Butte Dam, Stony Creek, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Model investigation of the single-tunnel outlet works of Black Butte Dam was concerned with developing an energy dissipator and irrigation diversion outlet. The investigation was conducted in a 1:16-scale model that reproduced the downstream 160 ft of the 23-ft-diameter tunnel, the energy dissipator, irrigation diversion outlets, and 560 ft of the exit channel. Operating conditions required the passage of flood-control discharges up to a maximum of 22,800 cfs, and diversion of a maximum of 530 cfs for irrigation purposes at total flows ranging up to 8000 cfs. The recommended design consisted of a combination energy dissipator-irrigation diversion structure.
