Spillway, Stilling Basin, and Flood-Control Conduits Keystone Dam, Arkansas River: Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Tests in a 1:100-scale general model were concerned with over-all flow conditions, with particular attention to conditions at the spillway abutments and training walls. Undesirable conditions at the right abutment were corrected without extensive training walls by adoption of a plan that provided a short bulkhead section separating the spillway and earth embankment. Development of a design for the hydraulic-jump type stilling basin was accomplished in a 1:36-scale section model which reproduced two full 40-ft-wide gate bays and adjacent half bays, with an equivalent section of the stilling basin, and three flood-control conduits. Baffle piers and an end sill were used to provide a basin of minimum dimensions capable of good energy dissipation during passage of the standard project flood (520,000 cfs) and barely adequate to maintain the jump within the basin during passage of the spillway design flood (939,000 cfs).
