Relating Design to Production and Inventory Costs,

Abstract

A cost model for a production - inventory system is extended to included costs for research, development and engineering and to relate the production costs and forecasts of demand to the research, development and engineering effort. Techniques are also developed for handling cost coefficients affected by the research effort. A linear programming model is then developed to optimize the cost of operation of a production system by developing aggregate decisions as to work force requirements, production scheduling, inventory and research, development and engineering effort. An illustration of the model is presented in an example problem. (Author)
