Improvement of Test Models of Tactical Dosimeters IM185 and IM188: Accomplishments and Proposed Continuation of Work.

Abstract

Tactical dosimeters IM185 (Army version) and IM188 (Air Force version) are used to measure total doses of gamma rays and fast neutrons delivered at low rates as well as at extremely high rates. The report describes techniques developed to alleviate the difficulties encountered in the use and maintenance of previous test models. The problems included electrical leakage of the electrometer quartz fiber insulator, especially after irradiation with gamma rays, outgassing of hydrogenous materials incorporated in the vacuum chamber of the instrument particularly after irradiation, and difficulties with the charging switch. Also reported are approaches to change sensitivity of the instruments in order to adapt them to Air Force requirements. (Author)
