General Washington: A Reappraisal of His Strategic Ability.

Abstract

The monograph illuminates one aspect of George Washington's generalship: his strategic ability. The War of Independence was much more complex than its often portrayed image of stubborn Americans outwaiting bungling Britishers; Washington's role was more than that of a Fabian who simply held things together until victory arrived. The war passed through four more or less distinct phases, each requiring a different application of United States military power. American strategy, as perceived and practiced by Washington, was appropriate in each instance. He was, in fact, a brilliant strategist. (Modified author abstract)
