The New Town as Antidote for Future Shock.

Abstract

It is becoming widely recognized that ability to adapt to rapidly accelerating change will be a primary determinant of the character and quality of life in American society of the future. Strategies for coping with change may include conscious adjustment of life pace, establishing relationships with the physical environment, and increasing ability to make long-range probabilistic forecasts. The utility of new towns as means of combatting such future shock was investigated. Data were gathered by means of field trips to Columbia and Greenbelt, Maryland; personal interviews; and the review of current literature. (Modified author abstract)
