A Review of Two Motivational Concepts and Their Impact on the US Army.
Abstract
The question addressed is whether or not the Army is taking appropriate steps to create an environment that is consistent with the goal of an all volunteer force. Research techniques included literature research, evaluation of various theories pertaining to motivation, and analyses of recent Army conducted or sponsored studies which discuss soldier irritants. Unless action is taken, at the top management level, to become more perceptive to the needs of the soldier, it is unlikely that the Army will be able to attract the quantity of volunteers necessary to satisfy requirements. Therefore, it is in the best interests of the Army to amend the Modern Volunteer Army Program and make use of existing data which indicates how to make Army service more appealing.
