Toward Greater Consideration of the Human Factor--A Challenge to the Military Manager of the Seventies.

Abstract

Contemporary behavioral scientist thinking has had a significant impact on traditional managerial practices within various type institutions and at all levels of organizations to include the military. This thrust for change, combined with the emergence of new societal values and the unpopularity of a long Vietnam War, have forced the military Services to review existing personnel policies and procedures with a view toward greater consideration of the human factor. To that end, the paper examines: (1) the influence behavioralists, society at large, and the environment have had on the role of the individual as a member of the military organization; (2) the opportunity for coexistence of individual aspirations and organizational needs within the military; and (3) specific activities where substantial changes have been introduced to meet the managerial challenge of the Seventies.
