Precision Single Sideband Crystal Units.

Abstract

IDEBAND (SSB) quartz crystal units which exhibit long-term aging of < plus or minus 2x10 to the minus 10th power /week when measured at the upper turning point (UTP) of 62C, and after a stabilization period of four weeks. In addition to the low aging requirement, the frequency hysteresis that often occurs under conditions of varying temperatures was investigated. Two concurrent work programs were employed to (a) fabricate resonators under precisely controlled conditions and (b) investigate their characteristics. The results of this work indicate that the performance of quartz resonators can be improved by fabricating them in systems and from materials that enable precise control of variables to be exercised. Monitoring of these variables by suitably sensitive instrumentaion is essential. (Modified author abstract)
