Properties of Electron Beam Weldments in 2 1/2% Ni-Cr-Mo Steel and 18% Ni-Co-Mo Maraging Steel,
Abstract
Electron beam welding of BS. S.98 steel, in the form of 1/4 inch plate, was carried out on the material in the hardened and tempered condition. After welding, a further tempering was effected as soon as possible. The properties of the welds were compared with those of unwelded samples in the same material. No deterioration in static mechanical properties was observed but fatigue tests indicated a drop of about 6% in fatigue strength at ten to the eighth power cycles due to welding. Electron beam welding of 18% Ni-Co-Mo Maraging Steel in the form of 1/4 inch plate was carried out on the material with a variety of pre and post weld heat treatments. The properties of the welds were compared with those of unwelded fully heat treated samples in the same material. (Modified author abstract)
