Symbolic Algebraic Languages - An Introduction.
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to introduce the beginner to the symbolic algebraic languages. These are languages that permit the analyst to do algebra and calculus on the digital computer. In general, these languages have been found to provide a valuable service, permitting the user to quickly and economically generate many sets of formulas that can be used for theoretical and numerical purposes. Considerable attention is devoted to examining how the symbolic algebraic languages differ from one another, and how they may be used. The IBM FLAP language is described in some detail. Several applications including a procedure for transforming differential equations and a telescoping procedure in approximation theory are discussed. The applications presented are representative of many of the problems that have been handled in FLAP in recent years. In each of the examples the mathematical algorithm involved in solving the problem, but not its implementation, is described in full detail. (Author)
