The Relevance of Relevance in the Choice of Comparison Others.
Abstract
It has been posited that individuals have a 'drive' to evaluate their opinions and abilities, and that in the absence of physical standards for performing such evaluations, they will generally choose 'similar' others for the purposes of such evaluative comparisons. The study examined the effects of the proportion of overall attitude similarity, the proportion of task relevant attitude similarity, and proportion of task relevant information provided on the ranking of potential work group partners for a specific discussion task, and the rating of them for general likability and desirability as a partner for an unspecified task.
