ARC Lamp Coating Development Program.

Abstract

The work accomplished under this program entailed the evaluation of coatings to provide protection from oxidation for Niobium as used with Alkali Metal Arc Lamps. Fourteen coatings were evaluated by coating lamp replica samples and subjecting the samples to a life test. The conditions of the life test represented typical temperatures and thermal cycling conditions for air operating lamps. The results of the testing showed that one coating provided protection for 100 hours at which time the test was terminated. Several other coatings provided protection for 50 hours before failure. All coatings were compatible with present fabrication techniques for Alkali Metal Arc Lamps. (Author)
