Quiet Short-Haul Air Transportation Terminal Area Scenarios and ATC Implications.

Abstract

The document (Volume I of five volumes) is a proposed program plan for improvements in air traffic control and airports required as part of the FAA's Quiet Short-Haul Air Transportation System (QSATS) program. In accordance with guidance from the FAA QSATS Office, the document is in the format of a chapter for a National Plan to Improve Short-Haul Air Transportation. The document summarizes the conclusions and recommendations of several scenarios and case studies which were used to examine the ATC/Airport implications associated with various concepts as to how the improved short-haul air transportation service is most likely to evolve. The ATC/Airport Program Poan is based on the findings resulting from those scenarios; on assumptions as to the types of airports and aircraft most likely to be involved; and on assumptions as to the nature of the future ATC capabilities expected from the FAA ATC program as currently defined. Supporting documentation for the ATC part of Volume I is presented in Volumes II, III, and IV which describe the scenarios and case studies made in the areas of Airport ATC, Terminal Area ATC, and En Route ATC respectively.
