The Evolution of Propaganda.

Abstract

The monograph addresses the history of propaganda. The evolution of this 'art of persuasion' is traced from the basic tribal society of primitive man to the tumultuous world of today. The present state of the art is not a modern phenomena, as some would argue, but, rather, a product of man's experience throughout the ages. What began as a very crude attempt to persuade, intimidate or deceive has been refined through the centuries to what is now more properly termed a science rather than an art. What was once the exclusive right of kings is now a common tool for the persuasive manipulator who could be the leader of a nation, an editorial writer for the local newspaper, a friendly face on a television screen or a political advisor to a suicidal Viet Cong sapper unit in the jungles of Southeast Asia. The techniques may differ but the instrument being used is the same--propaganda, and the contested prise--the minds of men. (Author)
