Comparison of Laser Recording/Readout Techniques.

Abstract

OLOGRAPHY, INTERFEROMETERSThe primary purpose of this program was to compare three types of photographic digital data recording methods using laser technology. These methods were direct digital, holographic interferometric, and holographic computer-generated recordings. It is shown that holograms are superior to direct recordings in such areas as packing density, redundancy, and ease of playback. The various techniques are also compared as to the relative ease of generating and recovering data associated with each method. Interferometric and computer-generated holograms are shown to have certain advantages which must be weighed according to the particular application involved. In addition, it is shown that acoustic-optic devices are especially suited for use in recording computer-generated holograms. The theory of operation of these devices is presented with a suggested approach for their evaluation in a breadboard recorder. (Author)
