Compatibility Measurements of Digital MSK and Voice Transmissions.

Abstract

The following describes a series of experimental tests to measure interference between digital and voice systems. The digital system consisted of a 2400 bit-per-second, minimum-shift-keyed modem whose 1.2 and 2.4 kHz tones were transmitted by amplitude modulation. Measurements were made showing the effects of digital interference on voice transmission, voice interference on digital transmission, and digital interference on digital transmission. The tests were conducted at VHF using a commercial aircraft receiver. The report also describes an experiment to frequency multiplex the MSK signal for simultaneous transmission with voice. Circuitry was developed to frequency translate the 1.2 and 2.4 kHz tones of the digital system to 6.6 and 7.8 kHz, respectively. Measurements were then conducted to demonstrate feasibility. (Author)
