Measurement of Psychological Needs and Perceived Organizational Presses, USAWC Class of 1973.

Abstract

Members of the Class of 1973 voluntarily respond to two separate psychological measuring instruments. These instruments were the Activities Index and Organizational Climate Index, both designed by Dr. George Stern. The Activities Index measures the needs of individuals, while the Organizational Climate Index measures the preceived presses which the individual feels are exerted upon him by his institution or work environment. A statistical analysis is used to measure the relative intensity of needs and presses. The interaction of the need and press is used to determine the amount of job satisfaction or degree of dissonance. Approximately 95 percent of the 228 students at the War College returned their anonymous questionnaires. They indicated a strong need for objectivity, achievement, self-confidence, energy, and dominance. They perceived the climate at the War College as pressing them for objectivity, achievement, affiliation, and self-confidence. The major need not being filled was the dominance need-perhaps a natural phonemea in a student status. (Author)
