Intake Studies, Dardanelle Lock Arkansas River, Arkansas: Hydraulic Model Investigation.
Abstract
Hydraulic model studies were used to check the adequacy of the proposed design for the lock features that will be included in the initial construction, particularly as related to distribution of flow at the lock intakes, possible formation of vortices, and effect of approach wall configuration. Since the valve recess is to be included in the initial construction, it was desired to use this model to determine (a) the effect of the gap between the skin plate of the culvert valve and the seal plate on pressures downstream, and (b) the optimum location of a port connecting the culvert with the lock chamber to increase pressures immediately downstream from the valve. Improvements in design were to be made where tests indicated them to be necessary to secure best performance and to effect economies.
