Stabilography in Neurologic Clinics,
Abstract
The human body continuously oscillates in the front-to-back and right-to-left directions, and this motion is often imperceptible to the eye. This motion of the human body or displacement of the body's center of gravity, is the result of the control of the act of standing by different segments of the nervous system; they involve complex reflex processes of the maintenance of the body's equilibrium. A new provedure for studying the stability of stance was developed by Ye. B. Babskiy et al. in 1951. It is based on the principle of the electrical measurement of mechanical values. This method has been called stabilography; it employs a special device for this purpose - the stabilograph - that permits the recording of the oscillations of the center of gravity of the body on two planes. The oscillations are expressed in millimeters. The method of stabilography has been used to study vestibulo-motor reactions and some problems relating to the physiology of standing.
