Design of a Secure Communications Processor. Volume I. Overall Environment and Concept,

Abstract

RITY ACCESS CONTROLS FOR COMPUTER SYSTEMS. The Processor was conceived to be hardware independent, but it is implemented on an Intercomputer Corporation i-50 communications processor. The report, one of five describing the design details, presents an introductory overview of the entire system. The design goals, deriving from certification and security requirements and applications requirements, are presented and their impact on the design is discussed. The report introduces the key design concept, a firmware-enforced stratification of the system by channel and by classification. Discussion of hardware, software, and memory organization illustrates how the concept is implemented. The volume concludes with a disucssion of loading and initialization requirements. An annotated bibliography on the ARPA Network is included. (Author)
