Mass Spectrometric Sampling of the Free-Jet Expansions of Gas Mixtures

Abstract

To achieve a better understanding of the composition of the upper atmosphere, it is necessary to obtain more information on the reaction kinetics of cluster ions. The purpose of the present investigation has been to determine the feasibility of producing mixed molecular clusters in the free-jet expansions of a variety of gas mixtures. Mass spectra have been obtained from cluster beams formed by the expansions of water vapor, steam, sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide, water/sulfur dioxide, water/nitric oxide, water/sulfur dioxide/nitrogen, water/sulfur dioxide/Argon, and water/sulfur dioxide/nitric oxide. The cluster ions observed are described.
