Electron Scattering from a Tungsten (100) Crystal,

Abstract

The elastic reflection coefficient for the spectularly scattered electrons (the (0,0) diffraction beam) has been measured for electrons scattered from the (100) surface of a tungsten crystal. The measurements were made at a polar angle of 53 degrees and azimuthal angles of 0 degrees, 22.5 degrees, and 45 degrees. The measurements were made on both clean and gas covered surfaces. The secondary electron energy distribution has also been measured at the above angles for clean and gas-covered surfaces. Both loss peaks and secondary peaks have been observed. A model is discussed which provides one explanation for the experimentally observed correlation of peaks in the elastic reflection coefficient with peaks in the secondary electron energy distribution. A comparison of model predictions and experimental results is made. (Author)
