Auroral Clutter Mapping with the Homer, Alaska Backscatter Radar.
Abstract
The High Altitude Effects Simulation (HAES) program is an effort to indirectly obtain information on the reaction of the upper atmosphere to nuclear explosions. This technical note is one of a series that provides brief descriptions of scientific programs investigating the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere under normal and disturbed conditions. The Homer radar has been developed over a number of years into a highly flexible multifrequency system to detect and measure specifically the radar reflections (clutter) from the various kinds of ionization inhomogeneities produced by atmospheric nuclear explosions. This radar has also proved to be a valuable tool in the investigations of auroral radar returns with a view to understanding the complex mechanisms producing auroral clutter. A description of the radar and auroral clutter mapping is given. (Modified author abstract)
