Development of Compliant Bearing Designs for Directional Control Gyroscope.

Abstract

The detailed results and conclusions of analysis and experimental checks of the basic operating characteristics of a typical externally pressur-ized elastomeric gas bearing are presented. Pressure, films, flow and creep properties of silicone rubber are given. Three hardnesses and layer thicknesses were investigated as were stiffness, damping, and elastic modulus. High speed (40,000 rpm) data was obtained for one tested rotor with an elastomeric molded spherical cavity bearing. An analysis of the thin elastic layer on a flat rigid surface provided a computer program to determine the compressive modulus of elastomeric materials. The experimental data fit the analytical curves accurately. Moduli of 250, 340, and 350 psi were found for the three hardnesses tested. (Author, modified-PL)
