Milestone Plan: Effects of Porosity on the Fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloy Weldments,

Abstract

The work to be performed is the fatigue testing of aluminum alloy weldments containing various amounts of porosity. Approximately ninety specimens will be tested. The program is divided into three subprograms. Subprogram 1 involves 18 sound specimens to be tested with the reinforcement on. Subprogram II involves 36 specimens containing various levels of porosity to be tested with the reinforcement removed. Subprogram III involves 36 specimens containing various levels of porosity to be tested in the as-welded state. In each subprogram the following tasks will be performed in the following sequence: test specimen preparation (matching), nondestructive evaluation (x-radiography), fatigue testing, post-test examination (porosity level determination, fractography).
