Reports in Meteorology and Oceanography Number 4. The Fused Quartz Deep-Sea Pressure Gauge.

Abstract

The report describes progress 1971 on the construction of a prototype deep-sea pressure guage. All of the necessary low power circuitry was designed, constructed, and tested by the Electronics Design Center at Harvard. A digital data acquisition system which processes and places data on 7-track IBM computer-compatible magnetic tape has been designed and constructed. All of the mechanical components, except for a deep-sea mooring, are also ready. At the present time the guage has undergone both high pressure and low temperature tests; every element has functioned properly in pressures up to 6120 m H2) (the highest pressure used) and temperatures down to 0.5C. The temperature and pressure dependences of the various outputs have been determined and a week-long stability test has shown the net drift to be less than 0.2 mm/week.
