Spillway Water-Surface Profiles.

Abstract

A procedure is developed and a computer program written for transferring USBR upper water-surface profile coordinates into terms required for Corps of Engineers design practices. The case of a high vertical weir is considered. The results are compared with WES experimental results and refinements added to effect closer agreement. Finally, equations are developed showing the relation between WES profiles for heads of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.33 times the design head. This relation is included in the program. The results of extrapolating USBR data to heads of 0.5 and 1.33 times the design head are compared with observed WES values. The procedure developed for design heads is applicable to spillways of varying heights and upstream face slopes. Application to other than the design head should be used with caution pending experimental verification. (Author)
