Abstract

The Managua earthquake of 23 December 1972 was the result of numerous, small-scale fault displacements which occurred mostly within the city of Managua. A coincidence between low rainfall, and its consequent low level of recharge to the Managua aquifer, and earthquakes is shown. The situation described is the reverse of the seismicity that is known to result from the filling of large reservoirs. Thus an intriguing set of relations which has never been examined before is pointed out. For some areas, the approach may be useful for purposes of prediction, as shown in Managua.
