To make the device more practical, processing techniques for obtaining usable operating lifetimes were developed. To assist in the study of the device's electron-optics and target performance, a demountable electron-optical bench was built. Lifetime improvement was verified in test tubes. Both improved tube design and the better processing schedules were incorporated into the final sample tubes. (Author)
