The Container Material Study: A Treatise on the Evolution and Continued Progression of Containerization
Abstract
A large variety of materials of construction for containerization has been presented in order to establish preferred sidewall materials and appropriate overall construction techniques for dry-freight shipping containers. The composite materials include FRP/plywood sandwich, FRP/styrofoam sandwich, FRP/urethane foam, Al/urethane foam sandwich, expanded metal/plastics, etc. The areas of properties of major con-cern strength-to-weight ratio, modulus of elasticity, ductility and brittleness, thermal expansion, dimensional stability, moisture absorption and corrosion resistance. An elaborate comparative analysis matrix, which is user oriented, is presented to allow the avid reader to utilize the raw data presented. Eighteen attributes can be comparatively ranked such that an optimum material can then be determined.
