VHF - UHF Surface Wave Studies: Compliant Layers for Wedge Transducers.

Abstract

VES, SURFACE WAVESThe design and operating characteristics of wedge transducers using layers of compliant materials between the wedge and substrate are investigated. It is shown that such materials, whose shear modulus is small compared to that of the substrate, can be used to control the coupling between wedge and substrate, as required for high efficiency operation. Compliant layers are of interest because they include materials that are self-bonding to the wedge and substrate, and therefore simplify fabrication. Plastic layers, with specific gravity near unity, are found to permit operation over a wide frequency band using bulk wave transducers on the slant face of the wedge that are realistic width. These plastic layers may be used for a wide range of substrate densities, including relatively light substrates such as fused quartz. It is also shown that compliant layers that are more dense than the substrate (indium on a YAG substrate) will provide the necessary coupling control, although over a narrower frequency band.
