A Recognition Algorithm for Liquids and Glides,

Abstract

A study was made on liquids and glides /l,r,w,y/ with the objective of discrimination among them in an automatic recognition system. Spectral time samples were selected from digital spectrograms of isolated bisyllabic utterances spoken by two male and two female talkers. Frequency dimensionality reduction was achieved using dispersion analysis. The sequences of reduced time sample were subsequently time smoothed and transformed to string representations using a chain-encoding technique. Based on the set of strings for each phoneme, syntactic recognition algorithms were applied. Recognition results for the four talkers are presented and discussed. (Author)
