Experimental Investigations of the Growth and Decay of Parametrically Excited Ion Acoustic Waves.

Abstract

A new technique is described for experimentally determining growth and decay rates of parametrically excited ion acoustic waves in gaseous plasmas. A microwave signal acting through a Tonks-Dattner structure is the pump for the parametric process. By switching the pump power from above threshold to below, the near threshold value of the decay rate of the ion acoustic wave is determined and shown linearly related to pump power, in agreement with parametric theory. This relation is employed to calculate the damping frequency of the ion acoustic wave, a term proportional to the coupling coefficient between energy in the pump and parametrically excited waves, and the threshold power for onset of the parametric instability.
