Attitudinal Changes in Category IV Perceptions of the Navy during Recruit Training,
Abstract
Attitudinal shifts during recruit training of 1,837 category 4 personnel were measured in the areas of: Expectations of adjustment difficulty compared to actual experiences; importance of 21 environmental characteristics/personal needs; preferences for the Navy over civilian life in containing these latter factors. A directional index of cohort naval preference (termed NIP), based on the probability model of attitude change, served as an interpretative aid as did four moderator variables. Analyses also were conducted for Upper and Lower Category 4 men. Findings indicated how category 4 men substantially overestimated the actual difficulty of adjusting to physical training, marching, classwork and following orders. Job-related and interpersonally-related motivating factors were judged most important on both measurement occasions. (Modified author abstract)
