Halographic Lens Systems.
Abstract
The goal of this investigation is to determine and analyze the geometric optics properties of holographic lens systems. The primary task is to find the first order transformation, by application of Hamilton's method. The general form of the transformation found is simplified by application of conveniently compared to conventional elements. It is determined that first order stigmatism can be achieved even though the elements are the off-axis variety. Systems of such elements are illustrated for various purposes such as image projection, magnification, telescopy, and Fourier transformation. Further discussion centers on the chromatic characteristics of systems of holographic lenses. It is concluded that holographic lens systems cannot compete with conventional devices for imaging with broad-band light, but that they should definitely be considered for laser illuminated applications.
