Research on Tropical Rainfall Patterns and Associated Mesoscale Systems.

Abstract

TIONS*SOUTH VIETNAMThe rainfalls of Belize and Southeast Asia are the subjects of this report. For Belize, the monthly rainfall, along with the advance of the rains is shown. The effects of fronts are different in relation to the season. Daily data for 36 stations in the Mekong Delta region of Southeast Asia were studied to determine rainfall patterns in the area. Daily rainfall data were summed into pentad or 5-day totals, and means, medians, and rates of change in rainfall were determined for each pentad at the stations. Consecutive pentads of rainfall were tested for correlation. Tests were made to identify significant differences between consecutive pentads. Average dates for the beginning and end of the rainy season were determined and maps were presented depicting these dates. An investigation was made of the areal extent of the mesoscale systems occurring in the region. The seasonal variation of the systems was determined and depicted graphically.
