Synthesis of High Speed Homopolar Alternators and Theory of Solid Rotor Electrical Machines. Investigation of Damper Windings and Transient and Subtransient Reactances of Homopolar Inductor Alternator.

Abstract

The transient reactance of an HIA (Homopolar Inductor Alternators) for the three-phase symmetrical short circuit was derived. The damping effect of the eddy currents in solid iron parts of the HIA's magnetic circuit was studied. Generalized reactances including the eddy current effects were defined and transient reactances considering eddy currents were calculated. The subtransient behavior of an HIA has been thoroughly analyzed by studying the four different types of damper windings. Reactances of the windings of an HIA were found from the solution of the nonlinear quasi-Poissonian partial differential equation for the vector potential. Reactances are functions of the rotor position.
