The Landing Signal Officer: A Preliminary Dynamic Model for Analyses of System Dynamics.

Abstract

A prototype model for the LSO (Landing Signal Officer) is developed. The model is derived based on considerations of the nature of the carrier landing task, human sensory characteristics, and LSO-to-pilot communications methodology. A central consideration in the derivation of the LSO model is seen to be the separate strategies that can be employed by the pilot and the LSO. The model is described via a digital computer program. It is used for two examples to demonstrate how, by appropriate calls, the LSO can prevent a ramp strike. A third example uses the MOVLAS to explore an alternative and far simpler approach to LSO modeling in those situations where the LSO-to-pilot communications can be linearized by an appropriate display.
