Optical and Mechanical Studies of High Polymers.

Abstract

The report presents a summary of principal accomplishments and a list of publications arising during the final two years of a longstanding project on the use of optical methods for the study of morphology and deformation mechanisms of high polymers. Theory, techniques and experimental results are presented for the methods of dynamic and relaxational x-ray diffraction and birefringence, infrared dichroism relaxation, and photographic and dynamic light scattering. Materials studied include polyethylene, ethylene-propylene, ethylene-methacrylic acid and ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymers, polyethylene terephthalate, and cis and trans poly 1,4 butadiene.
