Elastomers for Service with Engine Lubricants and Hydraulic Fluids.

Abstract

This program was undertaken to develop the poly(fluoroalkoxyphosphazene) elastomers into useful compounded stocks for use as O- rings, gaskets and seals. Compounded stocks have been developed with tensile strengths of 1100 to 2200 psi and elongations of 125 to 300% and retention of these properties under fluid aging, thermal aging in air and extended exposure to high humidity environments and to ASTM fuels. Compression set values of 26% and 49% were obtained at 302 F (150 C) and 392 F (200 C), respectively. In the presence of hydraulic fluids and oils at temperatures of 300 F and 350 F, physical property values have been retained at near original values on extended aging even though the fluids and oils themselves were decomposing. Cured copolymers were examined for thermal stability and after prolonged aging at 350 F AND 392 F considerable property retention was observed. Vulcanizates retained high tensile strength and elongation after 500 hours in water at 212 F (100 C) and 100% RELATIVE HUMIDITY. After 3000 hours in ASTM FUELS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, LITTLE CHANGE IN HARDNESS OR VOLUME OF THE VULCANIZATES WAS OBSERVED. These results confirm the promise of compounded poly(fluoroalkoxyphosphazenes) FOR USE AS O-rings and gaskets/seals in extreme service environments. (Author, modified-PL)
