Kinetics and Mechanisms in the Oxidation of Metal Vapors

Abstract

The report presents the preliminary results of a laboratory experiment involving the production of metal vapor, using two techniques (laser radiation and RF induction heating), and the measurements of reactants and products resulting from the mixing of metal vapors with oxygen by the use of time of flight mass spectrometry. Preliminary values for the heat of vaporization, ionization potential (for metal, monoxide, and dioxide) for thorium, as well as the reaction rate are reported.
