Ionogram Observations Supporting Chemical Release Studies in the E-Region.

Abstract

During a series of rocket flights for investigation of the lower ionosphere and neutral atmosphere at Eglin AFB, Florida in November 1970, May 1971 and April 1972, the ionosphere was continuously monitored with a Digisonde 128. Digionograms of the E-region with good height and frequency resolution were recorded every two or five minutes during the launch periods and with a ten minute sequence during the days surrounding the launch day. During the April 1972 series drift measurements with three special antennas complemented the ionogram observation. Comparison of the average Es activity with the specific conditions during and after the rocket flights showed unexpected high foEs values after each flight with a large TMA release. Electron density profiles for the E-region were calculated for the times of the launches. (Modified author abstract)
