Long Life Hardened Lithium Doped Silicon Solar Cell Investigation.

Abstract

A report is made on a program to develop lithium-doped silicon solar cells with improved stability, efficiency, and radiation resistance. A novel cell structure with an ion-emplanted barrier layer immediately below the P-N junction was developed and evaluated. The manufacturing process is described in detail. Actual results for lithium distribution, annealing characteristics and cell stability are compared to theoretical predictions for both barrier and non-barrier cells. Module fabrication including aluminum welded interconnects and integral cover glass is discussed. Performance of the experimental cells after electron and neutron irradiation is compared to that of non-barrier cells. (Modified author abstract)
