Reliability Improvement by Redundancy in Electronic Systems. III. A Quantitative Comparison of Redundancy Schemes.

Abstract

Using a previously established method, the performance of a number of redundancy schemes and their variants is assessed in terms of two measures which express the reliability improvement and the penalty associated with applying the redundancy. The relative merits of the redundancy schemes are discussed on the basis of these results, also taking into consideration some limitations and other factors which are not expressed in the two measures. These results provide designers of equipment employing built-in redundancy with valuable information on which to base a choice of redundancy schemes for a particular application. The redundancy schemes assessed include multiple majority voting, radial logic, stand-by redundancy, quadded logic, gate connector redundancy, and simple majority voting. Of these, radial logic and multiple majority voting are likely to be the most useful schemes for present requirements, but stand-by redundancy is also a promising scheme worth further investigation. The other three schemes may be useful in a limited number of situations. The Report also provides a pattern for assessment of other redundancy schemes. (Author)
