Digital Data Generation and Processing in Airborne Ionospheric Research.

Abstract

Digital formatting and processing equipment has been developed for reformulation, compression and display of on-line and off-line ionospheric data. This was necessitated by the inordinate amount of programming and computer time necessary for the processing of the complex multi-parameter data of digital ionosondes and scanning photometers. Two instruments resulted from this task: the Automatic Ionogram Compressor for digital ionosonde data and the Formatting Digitizer for auroral photometer data. Improvements to the Digisonde for aircraft operation and for bistatic experiments increased its use in auroral and other disturbed ionospheric conditions. (Author)
