Theoretical Calculation of Heavy Particle Induced Ionization Rates during PCA Events,

Abstract

Specific ionization rate expressions Q(z) for heavy particles are derived for Polar Cap Absorption events and presented in a form applicable to any atmosphere. Results are given for four types of spectra j(E, alpha) approximately = v (E) phi (alpha) for the incident particles: (1) monoenergetic and monodirectional, (2) monoenergetic, phi (alpha) approximately = ((cos sup beta)alpha), (3) monodirectional, v (E) approximately = E to the minus nth power, and (4) j(E, alpha) approximately = E to the minus nth power ((cos sup beta)alpha). When the spectrum is assumed to extend to infinite energy, simple analytic forms are obtained for Q(z) for spectra (3) and (4) for that region of the atmosphere in which the atmospheric depth exceeds the range of the minimum energy particles contained in j(E, alpha). Application of the results to obtain ionization rates for other spectral forms is discussed. (Author)
