An Experimental Investigation of Electron Attachment in a High Temperature Plasma.
Abstract
Mass spectrometric measurements of negative ion intensities are reported from the reactions of various electrophilic target gases injected into a high temperature sonic plasma reaction channel. Negative ion production resulting from supersonically injected target gases, N2O, SF6, C2F6/N2O mixture (90/10 by weight) and CBrF2-CBrF2 were studied in a reaction channel at temperatures above 2000K. Electron densities, electron temperatures, and gas temperatures were established using Ka-band microwave interferometric, optical spectrometric, X-band microwave radiometric, and thermocouple techniques which are discussed. A forward rate dominated electron attachment model is developed and used to evaluate the effective rate constant from the measured negative ion currents. These results are compared with electron attachment cross sections measured by other investigators at lower temperatures. (Modified author abstract)
