Aeroscout Pilot and Aeroscout Observer Responses to the Air Cavalry Tactical Information Survey
Abstract
A comprehensive survey questionnaire was administered to 14 aeroscout pilots and 15 aeroscout observers who had served in combat with Air Cavalry units. The objectives of the survey were to examine the methods and techniques that have been used by Air Cavalry aeroscout personnel in Vietnam, supplement existing knowledge of Air Cavalry operations, and furnish a basis for training program development for the aeroscout pilot and aeroscout observer. Some major areas covered in the report are: flight skill requirements for Air Cavalry pilots, target detection and recognition, low level scouting techniques, map- reading skills, fire-support adjustment, reconnaissance operations, operating with tactical air, and airmobile operations. Responses indicate a need for a formal training program for the aeroscout pilot and aeroscout observer.
