Optical Investigation of the Electronic Structure of Binary Alloys: Noble Metal-Noble Metal Alloys.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of optical investigations performed over a wide energy range of thin films of Au-Cu alloys in both disordered and ordered phases. The problems related to the preparation and the characterization of well-crystallized, completely disordered or ordered samples in the whole composition range are discussed. The optical data concerning both interband and intraband transitions are given for a variety of films, and discussed in some typical cases. These results are interpreted in the framework of new theoretical models proposed for the electronic band structure of disordered alloys, treated essentially in the coherent potential approximation. Ordering effects are considered. (Author)
